Own an established Job site

Are you looking for an established job website, with over 2,600 applicants and over 2,000 resumes?
Do you want to be able to control your future?
Do you have what it takes to run a Job board?
Do you have $25,000 to make a bid?

If you answered yes to at least two of this questions, then read on, this might be your opportunity. I am offering for sale 90% equity and ownership of OverseasContract(dot)com; established in 2007. I will retain  only 10% stake in the domain and webiste. The new owner may run the website as he likes. I will be a silent partner and will only be entitiled to 10% of future profits for life even in the event of a sale by the new owner, I will be entitled to 10% of the sale price.

OverseasContract.com catters to a particular niche; overseas contract jobs (OverseasContractjobs(dot)com domain is also included in this deal) This is usually 6 figure jobs and as such could be a very good source of income for the right individual. I am yet to implement any revenue strategy. We currently have amongst our few registered employers is PAE/Lockhead Martin and Modesta of Spain.

The job board has the ability to charge for membership and to charge for job listings if desired.

Site has never been advertised. Has spread from word of mouth and candidate referrals. I recently added an interesting feature which is the ablility of employers to filter the applicants by their security clearance status. This is a real neat and a highly regarded feature by USA military/federal overseas contract employers.

The reason for this sale offer is because I need to concentrate on one project and I have chosen to concentrate on the current development I have going on at PetMemorial(dot)com.

If you are interested, please make me an offer at offers@skydomains.com
All offers and equiries must have your full name, phone#, contact address, and url if applicable.
Minimum offer amount is $25K  for 90% ownership and equity.

Read ahead for features of the Job site software:

Current Feature List

Main Features
Main Page

Search jobs, browse jobs by date, by category or by employer. Latest jobs listed on the front page.

Job Seeker’s Area

Jobs seekers can sign-up and submit their resume or manage their Job Alerts. Job seekers can manage other things associated with their account.

Employer’s Area

Employers can sign-up and browse job seeker’s resumes, manage their advertisements (job postings) or manage their Resume Alerts. Job postings can be ‘Standard’ or ‘Premium’. Additionally, job seekers can submit their profile and manage other things associated with their account.

Administration Panel

The job board is highly configurable and there are many possibilities for running the job board. The administration panel consists of a set of web pages where you can:

  • Approve / Disapprove / Edit / Delete job postings
  • Approve / Disapprove / Edit accounts with the click of a button.
  • View / Edit / Delete resumes.
  • View sales reports and manage transactions, see who is currently online
  • Set Prices
  • Configure Categories, Forms, Language, Email Templates, General options, Columns on lists
  • Create / Send Newsletters
Cool! – Dynamic Forms

All forms, including the Job posting form, the Resume form, Employer’s profile form, and registration forms are modified visually from the Admin without modifying any source code.

The forms support a large number of field types including radio buttons, multiple selects, images, word documents, YouTube video, Flixn Video and more. Unlimited number of fields can be placed into a form and there’s no extra programming needed. The database is then configured automatically after the ‘Save Changes’ button is clicked.

Cool! – Dynamic Search Forms

Search fields can be added / removed to any of the search forms. No programming is needed, the search form is updated automatically after the ‘Save Changes’ button is clicked.

Cool! – Dynamic Lists

You can specify which columns are to be displayed on the list. Define columns which can be visible to the public, or only to the Admin. Various other options are available, including ‘sort by column name’. No programming is needed and you will see the result immediately!

Cool! – Themes & templates

A powerful template system allows designers to build custom skins for their Job Board. Additionally, ready-made themes can be downloaded and installed separately.

Cool! – Plug-in System

A powerful plugin system allows PHP developers and integrators to develop their own custom extensions / components to provide extra functionality. Additionally, ready-made plug-ins can be downloaded and installed separately.

Anonymous and Blocked Fields on the resume form

Fields can also be ‘blocked’ or set to be ‘anonymous’.

Anonymous fields encourage the job seekers to submit their resume while keeping their identity secret to the public.

Blocked fields are used in the Subscription system to entice the employer to subscribe to the resume database.

  • Anonymous fields will not be displayed to employers unless the candidate agrees to reveal them to the employer (eg. contact details).
  • Blocked fields will only be displayed to the employer if the employer subscribes to the resume database.

Both features can be toggled On/Off from the Admin.

XML Importing System

The XML Importing system is an extra feature that is bundled with the Job Board. You can train the job board to import jobs from any XML file spec, and jobs can be delivered to your job board via HTTP or fetched from another place using the file system, FTP download or URL download.

XML Exporting System

The XML Exporting system is an extra feature that is bundled with the Job Board. It includes the ability to build custom XML feeds, so that the data can be exported to other job boards and Search Engines. Includes out-of-the-box support for Google Base, Indeed.com, SimplyHired.com and RSS.

Members Only Fields

Fields on job posts, employer’s profiles or resumes can be hidden to users that are not logged in. You can also make it so that the user needs to be logged in and also be a paid-up customer before they can view the ‘Members Only’ fields.

Pre-Filled Fields on the job posting form

This is a great time-saving feature for the advertiser. Fields on the job posting form can be marked as ‘pre-filled’. When an advertiser posts a job for the next time, the data from the previous job post will be automatically pre-filled.

Multi-lingual

The Job Board can be easily translated to many different languages. Users can switch between languages on-the-fly.

E-Commerce Enabled – Billing System

The Job Board includes full support for collecting posting fees and subscription fees via PayPal and other payment methods. Additionally, subscription processing can managed by a custom PayPal Instant Payment Notification (IPN) module integrated with the Job Board software.

  • Advertisers can buy credits for posting. You specify the price and the amount of posting credits. Posting credits are bought in Packages (eg. $50 for 1 posting credit, $200 for 5 credits; any combination is configurable)
  • Advertisers are given the choice of buying Standard Posts or Premium Posts
  • Subscription are purchased for a period of time. (For example 1 month, 6 months or 12 months, any combination is configurable)
  • The Job Board can also run in a “free” mode, and Standard Posts are free to all. It is possible to limit the number of free posts per user.
  • Other payment systems include: 2Checkout, Authourize.net, MoneyBookers, CCAvenue, NOCHEX
  • Other non-instant payment methods supported, such as Bank Transfer and Check / Money Order.

New! – A Membership billing system for candidate and employers. This is a major addition to the job board which allows you to charge a signup fee to either candidates or employers or both.

Cool! – The job board can manage subscriptions for each customer, and if the customer used PayPal then PayPal will automatically re-bill the customer and notify the job board of the change, all is automated.

RSS Feeds

Distribute the latest jobs to other websites through a built-in RSS feed. For example, users can add the latest job headlines to their My Yahoo Page.

Email Alerts

Its is possible to enable / do the following:

  • Send automated Job Alerts to job seekers
  • Send automated C.V. Alerts to employers
  • Send Newsletters to employers / job seekers.
  • Email Alert to admin when a new post is posted
  • Email Alert to admin when a new user signs up
  • Alert to Admin when an application is sent

The job board uses an advanced email queuing approach which can spread the sending of email over a period of time. This ensures that large websites can send the email without bogging down the server.

Additionally, sever spam controls were included – for example the Job Board will only allow you to send bulk email to people who have explicitly opted-in, and it will not send email alerts to people who did not log on for more than 30 days (by default).

Map

If your job board is targeting a specific area, you can enable the map feature. The map will be displayed with each post. Advertisers can mark the location by moving the marker on the map.

Online Applications

Candidates can apply to the job postings online. You can control whenever the candidate needs to login in order to apply, or who the application goes to (Employer or Administrator or both). Candidates can attach up to 3 attachments at a time, and the application will be sent by email.

Tell A Friend & Save This Job

Job Seekers can use this feature to send an email to their friend about a job posting that they found. Users can also save their job listings to their private area.

Custom Time Zone

The job board’s date can be set to a custom time zone, regardless of the server’s time zone.

Categories

Categories can be defined for job listings. The categories can be navigated by links, or using the ‘Category’ field on the Search form. Additionally, it is also possible to specify categories for Resumes and other forms as well.

Customizable look and feel

The job board comes with a main.css file where all the styles are defined. You can control many of the look and feel aspects by simply changing the main.css file. Additionally header.php and footer.php files can be changed so that the job board fits in with the layout of your site. If you know a little php, you can modify the index.php page or other pages for even further customization.

WYSIWYG Editor

A fully featured WYSIWYG editor is included and can be used by advertisers to format their job postings how they want, the way they want. The editor can be added as a field to any of the forms, and is highly flexible. It includes a feature for pasting in documents form Word, where it will fix all broken HTML which Word can produce. (Additionally, the job board ensures to strip any unwanted or dangerous HTML…)

Input Filtering

You can create a list of ‘censored words’ not accepted by the job board. The job board also makes sure to filter all HTML and strip dangerous attributes from un-trusted input. Additionally, the job board breaks long words and includes some other nifty data cleaning options.

Export to CSV file

Job Posts, Resumes, Employers, Seekers and Profiles can be exported to a CSV file and imported to your favorite spreadsheet for further analysis.

Extra Stuff

The software contains some additional tools to make life easier.

  • It includes a Mail Monitor which is able to monitor your email box for bounced email and unsubscribe users form your mailing list automatically.
  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO) features, including XML Sitemaps and search engine friendly URLs (Requires Apache HTTP Server with Mod Rewrite installed). Ability to customize title, description, keyword and file-name for all categories.

Behold the interim look of PetMemorial(dot)com

Going from a free site to an adsense site may not be much of a challenge but going from a free/donations/ adsense site to a product based site is not so easy. As some of you know, my designers and programmers have been working on PetMemorial(dot)com for some time now. Design wise they are 90% done but when it comes to  functionality, we may still have some extensive tweaking to do. Well I took the time this weekend to give the site a face lift. We have often referred to the old site as the functional place holder of the real deal. I think I will call this one the interim place holder of the final site.

What you see now is nothing like what the actual site will look like. This is just me playing around but with a purpose. One of the main purpose of this interim look is to gradually introduce some of our product line to our audience and graduallygauge peoples enthusiasm to different types of  colors, products, and product lines.

One other advantage of the interim site is that it gives me the opportunity to gradually begin to build my product descriptions and gradually get them into the search engine while I wait for the final site. Also because I have something really functional now, I am at liberty to allow some lax time for my coders and designers in hope that this will in turn mean a better site in the end.

My wife thinks the interim site is very catchy but we both agree that the final look which we have both seen a draft of is more professional. For starters most designers agree that text on colored background is not really the best you can come up with for a site. However right now, we are simply trying to juice things up a little. Who knows people might even prefer the dark look.

If you are currently working on a site, how can I help you speed things up?  need advice or something? What do you think about the interim look? If you are a pet lover, what would you like to see implemented in the new site? if you have ever lost a pet, would you consider dropping a few lines in PetMemorial(dot)com, you never know who your simple words might help out of an emotional jam.

  • Paul J. Kapschock says:

The 1st thing I would do is get rid of the dark background and white lettering on black…get everything lighter.

I had to leave the one page after 5 seconds because it hurt my eyes.

If you are using a css system, should be easy changing colors.

Now, once lighter design…now you can concentrate on the design…which is very nice overall.

Lighten everything up, then revisit for comments.

I understand you may want “dark” for funeral/memorial needs or wants…but…..after a while, I want my pet to find the light!

    Best of luck,
    Paul

  • curvee says:

Your website put me off, the design is woeful , sorry to use that language but if you want to use the website for business, I must suggest that the website should be neat and cool to the eyes instead of muddle everything up.

You really need a good revamp of the site. Best of luck

  • Alan Dodd says:

The site looks nice to me – but I am not an expert.

The issue seems to me – which of these wordpress themes convert? Which have a proven track record, rather than being a guess.

The other day I heard WordPress “does not convert”. True? False? Where is the objective, hard, cold, evidence!

A good name is better than great riches

The title of this post was lifted from Proverbs 22:1 NIV  “A good name is more desirable than great riches….” How true this is with our present economy. We are currently in a recession and every economist knows that to right this economy, the Government will try to infuse some funds into the system which will lead to a period of inflation. If everything goes well, they will be able to balance the economy with time otherwise your guess is as good as mine.

Though King Solomon was talking about about someones character and legacy when he penned the good name  phrase but how true it is for us domainers when we substitute ” domain name” for “name”.

A good domain name will survive the recession and inflation and come out ahead eventually. You could have lost all your money in stocks recently (I am not knocking stocks- I own some)  but if you have one good domain name, its value will only get better with age. Domains they say is like fine wine, the older they get the better they become.

If you are smart, you will be going into stealth mode which is what I consider as thinning out your domain to the best ones. You need to do this quick so that circumstances do not force you to loose your great names prematurely. Any fruit tree that does not bear fruit should be cut down ipso facto any domain that is not pulling its weight needs to be re-evaluated. You need to go through your portfolio and try and remember why each name was registered. If  it is not bearing fruit, has its time passed or  is  its times yet in the future. This will help you decide which to keep and those to cut loose. This is not the time to be wasteful, it is just 8 dollars I know but 8 multiplied by 100 suddenly becomes $800– Oh the power of zero!  Time to let go of those midnight half baked registrations.

I started this post with a saying from King Solomon the wisest man ever. Now lets forget domains for a moment and think about what Solomon really ment.
In your quest for wealth, have you forgotten who you are? have you forgotten who’s son or daughter you are? If you died today will people welcome your kids because they have known you as such a great person or would they wish them bad because you were such a back stabber or terrible individual. What legacy are you leaving behind? Are you stepping on everyone below you as you climb the corporate ladder or whatever ladder you are currently climbing?

Are people genuinely happier because they  know you?

Stop and think.

Domaining.com: Show her some love

It is old news now that Domaining.com went to a partial membership system.  Well before that happened or should I say before it affected me or  best, before I was aware that it affected me, (Yes you guessed it right, bloggers “gots to pay” too for the premium service) I was already thinking what I am going to do about the whole thing.
The fact is even though Domaining.com legally belongs to Cybertonic, it i s still ours, it is our community, we are domainers and Domaining.com is us. So how does one become a good member of the community ?, they help the community grow in anyway they can. So I decided I will feature one domain name every month for the next year just to support my community.  Almost immediately I made that decision, I got a reality check, I was involved in the pay or no deal show. Yes bloggers got to pay too (At least this one has to). No free loading.

I just paid my$25  membership and I feel good about it. I am proud of it because this is our community. We need to do everything in our power to make it grow. A lot of infrastructure has been put into this site not to mention man power to get it to its present level. The site reflects  all of us.

It is often argued that anybody can do what Domaining.com does, I have even somewhat subscribed to that thought but I have also visited some of the stuff put together by other parties and I have this to say ‘ Not Good enough”
Sorry but that is my candid opinion.

Some people say why pay for something you can get free. To you I have this to say, “I can read reviews free online but I subscribe to “Consumer Reports” because I believe in them. I can read stories in “Best Life” online but I subscribe because I think it is a decent  mainstream magazine that needs to be encouraged.

It is not just about the blogs, it is not just about the featured names and who sees it first or next. It is about being part of a community. It is about belonging. It is saying I am a domainer and I support Domaining.com and her efforts.”

Things are tight and times are hard but if you put your mind to it, you can spare the $25 bucks per year for something you believe in. Remember “He who watches the wind will not sow and he who looks at the clouds will not reap” Ecclesiastes 11:4

Lift your head up imagine this is going to be your best domaining year ever , sow a seed of hope, pray and never stop working hard towards your goals. Always believe in the magic of  your dreams.
Yes you can, yes we can.

Vowels.me is now DNoptimizers.com

Develop your dreams

  • Well said Frankie.

In order to grow any industry or organization, you have to embrace it.

Credit reports are free to consumers as well, but this does not stop millions of consumers from paying/using sites such as freecreditreport.com to acquire their credit reports. It is the level of service that it is delivered that brings the true value to this service.

I have visited all the other sites as well that have launched to counter Domaining.com. While I applaud their efforts, they do not compete with Domaining.com services and infrastructure. Basic as can be.

Many said it was easy to do, yet the ones who have done so have failed to produce the same platform. I mentioned this in the past as we are developing GeoDomaining.com into the same kind of platform for development. It is not easy to do as flawlessly as Cybertonic has done it.

It takes resources and a talented team to do the job right.

Domaining.com will continue to grow because of the dedicated professionals who support the community.

  • John says:

I’m going to begin using another website. There is no reason that I should have to give personal information to read publicly available blogs.

  • Patrick McDermott says:

    Frankie,

How do you feel about having to pay to list domains
    For Sale?

This is in addition to a 10% commission if domain sells.

  • Patrick,
    Domaining.com is our CNN
I love the fact that we have to pay this way the site is not flooded with useless names. You often ask yourself before listing, will this name sell, what are my chances?
So to answer your question directly, I dont mind and that is why I had planned to list once a month and trust me due delligence will be employed before listing so that if the name does not sell, I know that at least I had put a good foot forward.
Now if the name sells, I am sure one will be happy with 90% of a sale rather than 100 percent of a name that one might never have the opportunity to sell

  • Francois says:

Regarding the contact info we now ask:
In fact any site with a membership use to ask this minimum information, it was an exception.
Now we want domaining.com become also a safe marketplace it’s a requirement. For example we need this info to can create an escrow.com transaction in the fly when a “Buy It Now” is clicked by a member.

Regarding the listing fee (let me copy/paste what I already said in another blog):
    – All we want free promotion for our names for sale.
    – All we think our names are the best: we rarely accept the critic and often overvaluate them.
    – All we prefer make money with our unwanted names and keep the best ones.
For these reasons the result when you accept to feature names at no charge is:
Much more garbage submitted, with a higher volume that probably we could not satisfy and with unreasonable BIN prices.
In others words: More work, more members complaining, and less sales.
The idea behind the listing fee is try to refrain these negative points responsabilizing the domain seller.
Now between the theory and the reality there is a gap.
Probably the listing fee is still insufficient as I am obligated to cancel some listings and fight to have BIN prices decreased.
The next that is going to be implemented is a realtime calculation of domain metrics of the submitted name.
Basically the BIN you could set should be capped based on the domain metrics.
This I hope should allow to propose better priced domains and maximize sale chances.
If this happen then we could decrease the current maximum listing fee from $20 to $10 or even $5.

  • I dont see the issue people are having with sharing there information.

I havent paid my $25 but Im not really looking to buy domains at present but I think I shall pay my $25 to ensure doamining.com stays alive!

    Regards,

    Robbie

What if America Sues? A case against Geo

Some years ago, some dude who owns Corinthians.com and used it to publish Bible verses from its namesake lost the name Corianthians.com to Corianthians football club of Brazil via a WIPO decision (This decision was later reversed by a US court)  If  a company can come after someone for their name and even claim common law use, what stops a country from going to arbitration for its name.com? If madonna can sue and be awarded Madonna.com, what stops America from sueing for you  know what or other host of coutries sueing for their domains?.

Just a case for thought. I will like to read your views

Favicon.ico

Ebay has it, Yahoo has it, Amazon has it, Domaining.com has it, NamePros.com, DNforum has it, Sedo has it, Afternic has it and DNoptimizers.com has it. If you do not know what it is then you need to read this entire post. You also have all weekend to make it happen for your site.
Does your website have it? Do you need it, how difficult is it to have one. So what is it? What is a Favicon?

A favicon (short for favorites icon), also known as a website icon, /files/includes/shortcut-icon.css, url icon, or bookmark icon is an icon associated with a particular website or webpage. A web designer can create such an icon and install it into a website (or webpage) by several means, and most graphical web browsers will then make use of it. Browsers that provide favicon support typically display a page’s favicon in the browser’s URL bar and next to the page’s name in a list of bookmarks. Browsers that support a tabbed document interface typically show a page’s favicon next to the page’s title. The Microsoft Windows Shell also uses favicon to represent “Internet shortcuts” to web pages.”
Source; Wikipedia
So the next question, do you need it?
Yes you do for branding purpose. Check out the Favicon of DNoptimizers.com, Pretty snazzy heh!

It is also cool because people like me who have many bookmarks below our browser, It makes it easy for me to list a lot more since for example I do not have to spell out Domaining, I just rename it to “D”. With Domaining’s distinctive Favicon, I can tell it anywhere without using up premium real estate.

Think about your favicon as your mini logo. The mini-me of your logo or that distinct part of your logo.
You probably just looked up at SkyDomains and wondering why the Favicon is so plain.

Well for now that is what it is. SkyDomains favicon is a work in progress.
This entire post was originally intended for the blog post of “DNoptimizers The Blog” So if you want to learn how to make a favicon, there is a FREE  tutorial at DNoptimizers.com for that. In just 9 easy steps you could be smiling at your new  favicon. We trimmed all the fat– trust me.

How effective is this for domain marketing?

How far would you go to sell a domain? How far have you ever gone to sell one? How much would you spend to sell a domain? These are all the questions that came to mind as I opened my mail box yesterday and saw these two postcards amongst other mail from Google and Yahoo telling me to come and advertise with them. These two postcards were not from Yahoo or Google. As a matter of fact, I have never had any previous dealings with its sender/s to the best of my knowledge.

I will not string you along any longer, here are the pictures of the postcards. After you have gone through them, consider the fact that one of them has 28 cents postage on it. If the sender sent out 100,000 pieces of mail, that will bring the cost of this mailing to $28,000 USD. What if they just sent a misery 5,000 pieces? the cost will be $1400.

I am not knocking this mailing by any means. In-fact I give the people or person responsible an “A” for effort. I encourage anything that brings domaining to mainstream but my problem is that neither my wife nor any of my friends got this postcard. Just wondering if the domaining community was these peoples target, wouldn’t a simple ad on Domaining.com or DnForum  or even a featured listing on Sedo been cheaper? Please share your thoughts.

  • Jim says:

Hey there Frank, I read from your other post that you’ve been away so welcome back!

Yeah, this method of marketing domains has been discussed a few times recently by some of the bloggers in the domain community.
One such post that I remember was by Jason over at DNPimping.com

    http://www.dnpimping.com/domaining/domain-spotlight-tuesdays-featherpad-com/

I would go so far as to say that this person/these people target domainers and blof owners specifically.

Although the domain names themselves are not too bad, I don’t think it’s particularly creative and I think the asking prices are nonsensical. This is just my humble opinion however.

  • Thanks Jim,
I suspected it might have been covered while I was away. I however did cover it incase it was missed.

Nature Calling: A case of bad branding?

One of my pastimes is perusing the local flea market. I have also convinced my wife that it is a fun thing to do. Due to a sports injury, I often simply ride around the flea market in my truck instead of walking. This last weekend as I was making my rounds as I call it, I stumbled upon a booth that baffled my imagination. Parked behind the booth was the most tricked out SUV (customized) I have seen in months. This one had it all, 22 -24″ rims, Chromed out with all the works. I could not even readily tell the make of the SUV. It was very eye catching and on it was a big flourecent green logo and the words “Nature Calling” written under the logo. I tried desperately to figure out what it was all about especially since I saw some neon jerseys with the logo being sold. I could not stop because there were other vehicles behind me.  I asked my wife to please help me write down the name as I drove on. Since then till now I have pondered what this Nature Calling  was all about. Was it a health food store? a Clothing line? A bad to the bone custom auto outfit? Everything but the obvious. The reason I write this post is because I am a strong advocate of  the 15 mile/hr rule which states that while travelling at 15 miles per hour, I should be able to decipher your company name and link it to a product without much ado. This particular sign failed because it did not even have an url.

Just before writing this post, I did a search on Google for nature calling and behold the most likely result

Nature’s Calling Inc. is a Charleston, South Carolina-based portable restroom and waste removal company with twenty-five years of experience.
Of course now the name makes sense but who was thinking along that line. Perfect domain name? Immaginative I will say.
I still wonder if this was the company I saw at the flea market. I am also not sure if it was Nature’s Calling or Nature Calling that was written on the tricked out SUV.
The moral of this story is to think carefully before you name  your company or you could be mistaken for a crap company :D

Analyse this: Offer for uAnalyse.com?

Just thought you guys will get a kick out of this. It is possible a lot of you may have already received similar offers in the past but I have come to realize that no two domainers replies to offers quite the same way.  These days I have taken to ignoring obvious low ball offers from Sedo. A lot of people will frown at this practice and I am not advocating it to be the best method but I am thinking if you see a category killer domain with more than 10 past offers, it is unlikely, 500 bucks is the asking price.  When offers come to me directly via email, sometimes, I will wait till I get to my home office to reply to such offers after due research and other times, I will reply immediately from my Droid. Here is one of  those scenarios. Enjoy and have a great weekend

Dear Sir/Madam

I am a student from the Netherlands and I am currently working on an school assigment (international business), in which we have to do a virtual start-up of an international company.
I came up with the name uanalyze for the project, when trying to register the domain name I found out it was already in use. Looking at the website, it does not appear to be in use.
Through the hosting company I got your e-mail address to contact you.
Is is possible to get this domain name from you? I am willing to pay some money for it, as I really would like to get a good grade for this assigment :)
Thanks,
Claire

Forgive Me Domainers For I Have Failed

This is definitely not the title I had envisioned nor the post that I had planned for this point in time but this is the post I have for you today. I am hoping that in sharing this openly that it might somehow inspire someone in the same condition and let them know that they are not alone. Failure on its own is not bad since what becomes of you after is more important than the failure itself.

This post is a story of my passion and drive for a particular domain and how I have struggled and failed repeatedly to bring it to its full potential. Where do I start, I will try a quick summary of events leading to my latest failure. I purchased Petmemorial(dot)com a couple of years ago in the secondary market. At the time of purchase, all I had was passion and love for animals.

Hanna-Pic

Hanna

My decision to buy the domain name then was as a result of some live events and a special dog called Hanna. Prior to purchasing the domain, I owned PetHall and it used to be a portal for pet lovers. In its prime PetHall offered free email, greeting cards and a lot of things which by today’s standards is not a big deal but was a big deal sometime around  2000 and 2003. When Hanna a German Shepard mix which belonged to my then girlfriends mother passed away, she was so devastated and frankly it could be said that words can not clearly describe how my girlfriends mother felt. However I did notice the soothing feeling Hanna’s memorial in PetHall gave her. At that very moment my ambition to provide a place where grieving pet owners can feel better and mingle with  other pet lovers who may be able to provide comfort was born. I purchased pet memorial a couple of months later and almost starved doing it. I was a lowly Airman with the US Air Force at the time.

From day one, I have never lacked ambition or ideas for pet memorial (PM) but I have never been able to bring my ideas for this wonderful domain to fruition. In the early days, it forwarded to pethall/petmemorial and then as my interest in pethall wained, my interest in PM grew.
I moved it to its own hosting and that was when the journey began. PM has been a Frontpage site, a Subdreamer site, it has been vbadvanced/vbulletin adapted site, It has been a Geek Articles and Review adapted site and even a WordPress site  and while it went through all these changes, my vision for the site remained strong, despite the fact that I was not getting it to be all it could be.

In 2006 when I was in the desert supporting the armed forces, I had 10 hours of spare time and a slow but available computer. I quickly set out for a coder and hired the best one I could find at vWorker then known as Rent-a-Coder. When this guy was done, What I got was a skeleton of what I had envisioned. I learned a hard lesson then which is to make sure everything in future is spelled out in writing. Do not assume anything when contracting a job. Some of these coders can be funny in there ways.  Needless to say, that development went no where, my money was gone and I still could not use the site he built. I however salvaged two functionality from his work which we call post-a-paw and light-a-candle. I patched these two functionality to the site as I went back to using and adapted vbulletin engine.

This year I wanted to make sure I focused on one domain or site.
From the middle of this year, I had one goal. It was simple. To finally bring PM to its full glory. I got two sample sites to explain the workings of a memorial site, I then proceeded to pen down every detail of how my PM would work. I posted the job again at a freelance site. I had over 30 bids. I then proceeded to ask each one of them questions to see if they even understood what they claim they can do. Most never replied satisfactorily. There was however one  particular coder/company who was rated #22 out of over 300,000 of his peers who impressed me.  He wrote flawless English, and when I fired him with a 10 point questionnaire, he proceeded to answer each and everyone of my questions. He was by far NOT the cheapest, he was not exactly the most expensive but he was up there; top 5 in pricing. He was however the most highly rated in expertise amongst those that bid on the job.

I am going to cut a long story short here. My coder was never able to complete the job despite 3 extensions. What bothered me the most was that the main functionality that mattered to me was never really done even though he had completed 70 percent of the site. Another issue was the fact that his so called completed work was littered with avoidable errors and bugs. I got tied of spending almost 5 hours daily combing through his work to point out errors and omissions. When I finally pulled the plug on the project, it was not as much the fact that he never finished the job but more along the lines that I did not think he could ever finish the job. He had hit his limit. He is a great coder but with very little imagination. The back-end of his work was an apology to say the least. Luckily for me this time, I had a very descriptive contract  with clear spelled out expectations so I was able to work out with my funds.

I am gradually bringing back PM to a  WordPress site as of the time of this writing. In domaining as in live, you will hit many roadblocks but somehow the difference between winners and losers is often determined by whether you get up and keep fighting or you trow in the towel. I have decided I will fight to the end even though at times like this it becomes difficult to keep a positive attitude yet it is at times like this that one needs a positive attitude the most.

Forgive me domainers for this  should have been a grand tale of the successful launch of the best pet memorial site the world have ever seen, a place where grieving pet owners can find some comfort and solace. Yes I have failed yet again but by Gods grace, I will succeed some day. If this becomes my last post before Christmas; Merry Christmas everyone and may the New Year bring forth great insights and blessings from the most high.

The Article Domainers Wish Every Business Framed

Happy new year everyone.  I will continue my policy of blogging only when I absolutely have something to say and this is one of those times. I saw this article in Yahoo and I wish more people especially people in business read this article or at least the part of it that I am going to devote this short post to. Believe me this is worth every second of the 3 minutes of your life you are about to share with me.

The article is on Six companies companies that did not survive 2010 and one of the companies there really caught my attention as a domainer. Since I am a domainer and do not want to be accused of embelishing the article, I am going to do a long quote instead of putting this juicy story in my own words.

Eliene Zimmerman of The New York Time writes about Wesabe a personal finance Web site based in San Fransicico;

Wesabe opened in 2006 and closed in July.

AT ITS PEAK Wesabe was one of the first movers in the Web 2.0 financial space. Its founders, Mr. Hedlund and Jason Knight, envisioned a site that would help consumers budget their money and make better spending decisions. The company received two rounds of venture capital financing totaling $4.7 million and signed up 150,000 members in its first year.

WHAT WENT WRONG Ten months after Wesabe’s introduction, a competitor, Mint.com, appeared. As Mr. Hedlund acknowledges, Mint had a better name and better design and was easier to use. Within nine months, Mint had 300,000 users and $17 million in venture financing. In 2009, Mint was sold to Intuit for $170 million.”

All I can say is what a terrible name Wesabe is. This guy did not have to own Mint.com when he started but he could have at least opted for a better name than Wesabe.

All I can say it ” amen “. It’s about time somebody else gets it. Thanks for posting this.

  • While a domain name can help in branding, search ranking and in the case of a .COM in type-in traffic, the domain name alone cannot guarantee a business’ success. Businesses in prime locations can suffer from the cost of being in those locations (i.e. restaurants on Fort Lauderdale Beach which have closed). Sometimes a location close to the ideal spot is best because the rent savings can be significant. But of course location can still make a huge difference in a business’ success.

  • A domain name alone can’t guarantee success, but in this case the company could have used a fraction of their $4.7 M financing to buy a killer domain with some traffic that would have greatly helped. Wesabe is a poor name, and doesn’t pass the radio or word of mouth test.

  • Hello Frankie,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Although some may say that a domain address cannot guarantee success, What is the odds on truth of a domain names importance?

All words lay down an emotional foundation in our minds.Words emit emotional energy that is picked up and either attracts attention or drives it away. So I ask you how important are words?

    Gratefully, Jeff Schneider (Contact Group)

I remember thinking when Wesabe first came out and was getting coverage that it was a big mistake to pick a name that sounds so much like Wasabi.

Possibility for confusion was too great.

  • Shane, I do not know how or why your comment ended in the spam folder. I had to dig it out personally.

An Encounter With an End User

Each time I have a brush with a potential end user, it is always exciting, When that end user is the Executive Vice President of a Multi-Million dollar Company, excitement reaches a whole new dimension.
Last weekend I was introduced to a gentleman who  is the Executive Vice President of a multi-milion dollar  company. Some of there products deal with defense and other high tech stuff. After all the pleasantries, he gave me his business card. The domainer in me took over immediately. I noticed that the URL of there company is  TheLLLGroup.com (LLL substituted for actual name) so I asked why not LLL.com and his reply was simple “We don’t need it that bad”

When it was convenient I checked to find that  LLL.com was being used but not by his rival. The interesting thing was that LLLGroup.com is parked and still available for sale but they made no move to purchase this name. His company actually goes by LLLGroup so why add “The” to the URL instead of spring for LLLGroup.com?

Here is the body of this post.
Most end users still do not care. Most will add “The, Go, Our, Now, My ” or whatever comes to there mind rather than spring for a name. Look at our biggest registrars (GoDaddy.com, enom.com )

This is not the first time I am seeing this type of scenario.

The end user just does not care for domains as much as we do.

May I add that this particular end user did not have his company URL on his card. I deciphered the URL from his corporate email on the card.

My question is why don’t they care? What can we do? This  particular end user is no novice to domains, he is even aware of the prices they command but just feels they do not need it that bad.

I must  add that I do not own any of the names referenced.

Have you had any experiences like this?

  • I have not had many encounters with end-users, but they do not know the value of the domain you are trying to sell then. I can understand your situation, the company was developed and has been using that domain for some time i imagine. So why would they change.

Domains are only good to end users trying to get into domaining or trying to start out a domain but there are the few developed businesses that purchase domains that are linked to there product they have or are building.

I guess some buy and some do not care.

  • Yes. In recent weeks I have been targeting companies with hyphenated domains, 2-3 word .net/.biz/.org domains, and brand names which do not describe their product or service. The response after more than 300 letters thus far has been practically nil and these names are NOT priced for thousands of dollars. One response I did receive perhaps summarizes it well, “…what we have already (a two-word .org) is sufficient…”

  • Michael says:

They don’t know the value of domains because we are not educating them. We should be explaining the power of type-in traffic to businesses every chance we get. When he said “we don’t need it that bad” you should have jumped on him and told him he can’t afford not to own the LLL.com, and explained to him why. Every time we accept a lame excuse for why a business is fine with a crappy reg-fee domain, we are hurting ourselves and our industry.

  • Micheal,
I wish I could agree with you but ironicaly, not everyone needs a killer domain. If you are the only surgeon in town, your name does not have to be easy to pronouce. This guys company definately did not need the LLL though it will look nice. What I do not understand is why they did not get the LLLgroup.com since that spelt there company out.
Believe me as hard as it will be for us domainers to accept not everyone needs a killer URL. This company I assure you does not need or desire type-in traffic.

My First Check From Indeed

Good day people. Have you received your Indeed.com check for the qauter yet? When I got home yesterday, waiting for me was an envelope from Indeed.com. Yes it is finally here, my very first check from Indeed. I thought it will never come, for most of the time until recently I had ignored the revenue since it was just so little. However recently I added the required tax information which made me eligible for the next round of payments.

Now lets not get carried away. This is not a big check especially when you consider the fact that Indeed only pays quarterly. Somehow my biggest excitement is that I have seen a progressive revenue increment from the (more…)

(more…)

Amazon.com, a website worth emulating

Good day people. It is probably months now since my last post. Initially it was due to school but recently it has also been due to a medical condition. I am alright . Approximately one month ago I had a hip resurfacing surgery. Over 4 years ago, I sustained what at the time seamed like a sprain while running at the beach. This later developed to pain so unbearable I had no other choices but to choose between a hip replacement surgery and a hip resurfacing surgery. At this very moment, I am somewhat off crutches and can move around almost freely. All that remains of my old pain is a six inch incision scar.

I have always been a prolific web shopper but when  you are home and cannot move much, Internet shopping takes a whole new meaning. There is one thing Amazon does that I still do not understand how they pull it off and still (more…)

GoDaddy CEO Buys Cher’s Domain

The Friday edition of  The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Bob Parson, the founder and CEO of GoDaddy.com has just paid a whooping $8.72 million for a Balinese -style house on Hawaii’s Big Island that was built by Singer-actress, Cher. The property went to auction last month. “Located at the Four Seasons’ Hualalai resort, the property includes a main house and four one-bedroom bungalows. Cher bought the property in December 2004 for $2.9 million and last year began building the house but never lived in it” WSJ (2010).

Talking about Cher, is she still on her never ending final tour? It appears so.

Who owns Cher.com ? The site looks like it should belong to her and is devoted to her but who-is points to :

Registrant:
   Manatt, Phelps & Phillips, LLP
   11355 W. Olympic Blvd
   Los Angeles, CA  90064
   US

This is probably her production company that registered the name for her. Awesome mini site!

OK people, I am back to studying for a test tonight. It was nice chatting with you guys again even if it was for a short trivial fact.

Boocoo.com spending $6 Million monthly on advertising

So BooCoo.com is spending $6 million monthly on advertising, my question is where is my share? If  the name is new to you then a few lines of  intro will be in order. Boo coo means a large number or huge amount. Boo coo is originally  from the French beau coup. It was brought to the United States by retuning Vietnam war veterans who heard it from the heavily French influenced Vietnamese. (urbandictionary.com) Boocoo is an online auction site much like ebay.  While not particularly a fan of ebay, hence I have hoped for a strong competitor in this field. I was so excited when a couple of weeks ago, in between study breaks, I picked up my local newspaper and saw a full page ad by boocoo auctions.  Part of the news paper ad read

Boocoo may be the new online auction in town, but we have
Partnership with over 300 media outlets across the country.
That ‘s an audience of 22 million with $6 million of newspaper,
TV and online advertising support monthly. With no fees

until you sell, you can try it risk-free. See how we put the awe .
          back in auctions

Boocoo has a long way to go if ebay is its target. For starters, the site looks, well cheap. Don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with the site but with a monthly budget of 6 million USD in advertising, I think I would have come up with something that would have dazzled the world. Perhaps to dazzle the world is not the goal, sometimes there is magic in simplicity.  But in boocoo’s case, is it so over symplified that it might end up being ignored? I however think that the no fees until you sell is a brilliant idea and if they succeed, might pose a big problem for ebay. What is missing is there own PayPal or shall we say BooPall.

What would you do differently if you were boocoo? I personally would have tried to find a way to get lots  of cheap products for starters, maybe concentrate on one niche for a period and hopefully it spreads that way. Taking on a giant like ebay is not easy even with $6 million monthly ad budget. Maybe some of those dollars would have been better spent on affiliates. Remember, Paypal became immensely popular by bribing us with $5 bucks per referral in he early days.  I have already registered for a user account, you never know what I might want to sell some day. Like ebay I like to say I was one of the early adopters.

By the way if you did not know the meaning of the name prior to reading this article, would you have considered it a good name? Do you still think it is a good name even now?

I think it is somewhat confusing to spell, at least in the beginning. I hear someone saying, much like Google.

  • Mr NoBody says:

BooCoo is a poor brand name, with that kind of money behind them they could have bought a memorable name like Bid.com ..or Bido.com

  • Robert S says:

The figure of $6 million monthly spend on advertising is pure fiction. You might as well claim that your internet website is worth billions considering the cost of building the internet infrastructure…

  • Robert,
Hard to say, but remember a full page ad in the Post and Courier (Sept 30th 2010) is not exactly peanuts. If that is duplicated in other states…, you see where I am going with this.

  • Dean says:

While I think Boocoo is a good name (it has a nice ring to it) and offers many branding possibilities, I think trying to launch an auction site that even remotely competes with E-bay is absurd and an uphill battle that none will win no matter how much is devoted to advertising.

The thing is that brands like E-bay, Google, Amazon are so deeply entrenched in the internet that they almost are synonymous with the services and products they offer. At best you could hope to find a niche that you could corner and specialize in. Not trying to be a bummer just realistic.

  • Felix says:

for me the site redirects to google…money well spent

  • Dean,
Dont forget, there was a time Yahoo might have seamed impossible to summount by Google.

  • Jim says:

    boocoo.com redirects to google

  • Jim,
I noticed the site was having problems yesterday when I wrote the post. I thought at the time it was the fault of my cable connection. I was however able to access it but it took a while to resolve. So much for $6M.
After writing the sentence above, I tried accessing the site and I found it without any problems. Is it possible you might have missed one o, or added too many in the spelling? It happens.

I Want Two of Your Best Domains

I am asking my readers to submit 2 of your best domains if you will. For a period of two weeks I am going to insert them into the Featured Domain marque at the top of my side bar. I will also publish them in  “DNoptimizers – The Blog
You owe me nothing. Like I mentioned in my post earlier this year, one of the things I am working on in 2009  is “gratitude”.  If  gratitude was important to Christ then it is a virtue I have to make a conscientious effort to master.  I know it is no biggy but it is my humble way of saying thanks to you my readers.
The rules are short and simple.
Rule #1 Domain must be a .com
Rule #2 Must not be a domain your grammy will not want to visit.
Rule #3 All domains must have selling price.

American Dream

This is a special post not only because I ordinarily do not blog on Sundays but also because today is Father’s Day. This post also has some pictures which is an anomaly in my blog. I urge you domainers especially those of us that are very active in domaining and at work to take the time sometime during the week to read this post. There is a message there for everyone. How will this post affect your domaining empire? I will say immensely because life has always been a matter of balance and to me the most successful domainers or individual is someone who has found a way to balance work and life.  In the end your most priceless domain is the one you lay your head in, not the physical structure but the people around you that make up what we have come to call family. My daughter turned eight months old  yesterday so the first set of pics where at the beach yesterday while the other set of pics are from today after church service.

Happy father’s day to all the current and future father’s out there, a quick shout out to my friend “Mike” (ocDomainer) I know you are having a swell time with Sam.

Zara, the sky is your limit

Zara, the sky is your limit

The Kiss

The Kiss

If you fall I will catch you

If you fall I will catch you

Daddy's girl

Daddy’s girl

Happy Fathers Day from my family to yours

Happy Fathers Day from my family to yours

For this post I am borrowing the lyrics of a song by Casting Crowns called “American Dream ” available at Amazon. Click here to listen to a sample of the song ( Please note, this is NOT an affiliate link)

“American Dream”

All work no play may have made Jack a dull boy
But all work no God has left Jack with a lost soul
But he’s moving on full steam
He’s chasing the American dream
And he’s gonna give his family finer things

“Not this time son I’ve no time to waste
Maybe tomorrow we’ll have time to play”
And then he slips into his new BMW
And drives farther and farther and farther away

Cause he works all day and tries to sleep at night
He says things will get better;
Better in time

[Chorus]
So he works and he builds with his own two hands
And he pours all he has in a castle made with sand
But the wind and the rain are comin’ crashing in
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands
His kingdom stands

Well his American Dream is beginning to seem
More and more like a nightmare
With every passing day
“Daddy, can you come to my game?”
“Oh Baby, please don’t work late.”
Another wasted weekend
And they are slipping away

‘Cause he works all day and lies awake at night
He tells them things are getting better
Just take a little more time

[Chorus]
So he works and he builds with his own two hands
And he pours all he has in a castle made with sand
But the wind and the rain are comin’ crashing in
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands
His kingdom stands

He used to say, “Whoever dies with the most toys wins”
But if he loses his soul, what has he gained in the end
I’ll take a shack on the rock
Over a castle in the sand

Now he works all day and cries alone at night
It’s not getting any better
Looks like he’s running out of time

[Chorus]
‘Cause he worked and he built with his own two hands
And he poured all he had in a castle made with sand
But the wind and the rain are coming crashing in
Time will tell just how long his kingdom stands
His kingdom stands

All they really wanted was you
All they really wanted was you
All they really wanted was you

What a good looking family! Hope you have a great day with them today.

BTW… you aren’t really showing off your daughter in picture #1 – you’re showing off them guns!

  • Jeff Jones says:

I agree! Beautiful family! What a blessing. Myself, I have one graduating from college in Dec., one going to college in the fall, and MY baby will be in 10th grade! They grow up fast.

Just updating on what I have been doing

Peace on to you fellow domainers. I just want to take a few minutes and update you on what I have been doing, where I have been and what I have been doing with my brands.

First and foremost, I am now a member of  Twitter. It is the new rave  in the domain world. I have known about Twitter for more than a  year now but felt it was just another waste of my time. I followed ChefPatricks twitt here on Domaining and before you know it, I became a member. In fact I just ordered the book Chef recommended on his blog a couple two days ago on how to make Twitter pay for more than your time. It will be here on Monday. When I read it , I will give a brief review.

I have also been working  on some of my sites. I updated some of the ones that run forum software to the new adsense friendly version. My goal is to double my adsense earnings by next month. I have seen significant increase for my efforts so far. (Don’t ask me how much I make it is too low for print :D )

I changed the look of  SafariRacks I believe you should always take care of the well that provides constant water. I somehow like the new look.

I also changed the look of PetHall. I am working on bringing all my pet sites together into one inter linked network. If you have a strong pet oriented website , lets talk link exchange.

On a personal note, I started working out again on Tuesday the 17th.  I need to loose 40 pounds and go back to my magnificent 225lbs bodyweight

Well I hope I have got you up to speed.  Hope this post took you less than 3 minutes to read.

“In all labor, there is profit”  Proverbs 14:23

Apple sued over iCloud; Over Reach or Deserved?

So the news today is that a Phoenix based company is suing Apple claiming that the iCloud name infringes on its trademark. The company name in question is iCloud Communications whose primary business is  Voice over IP. They claim that Apple’s use of the iCloud name for its services courses confusion

“The goods and services with which Apple intends to use the “iCloud” mark are identical to or closely related to the goods and services that have been offered by iCloud Communications under the iCloud Marks since its formation in 2005. However, due to the worldwide media coverage given to and generated by Apple’s announcement of its “iCloud” services and the ensuing saturation advertising campaign pursued by Apple, the media and the general public have quickly come to associate the mark “iCloud” with Apple, rather than iCloud Communications”

Do you think this company is overreaching or Apple is just experiencing a dose of its own medicine. I think in the end money will change hands to avoid litigation.

    2005?
    cloud was around since 2000/
They are a little late to the party.
Sounds like they don’t have the trademark on icloud of iclouds but some two word trademarks.
2005 is to late to claim icloud.

  • todaro says:

when apple computer started they were contacted by apple records (beatles) about their name. apple records decided to let it go with the proviso that they stay out of the music business. now that apple has a couple hundred billion to throw around they’ve got a court ruling that says ipod & itunes have nothing to do with the music business. go figure.
