Bailout for the domain industry?

Seriously, since every industry is going for a bailout, we might as well propose and apply for one. The economy has dealt us multiple blows. PPC has declined or vanished in some cases. Infact I have recorded a few days now with 0.00 earnings for the day from PPC.

To make matters worse, the landscape is becoming tougher for domainers with legal actions and what not. If you have a really good name, you might want to trademark it somehow and tie it to a service  or one day, some company with a lawyer and a dream could just be after your domain. We have seen even our industry greats fall prey so this is no longer exclusive to cyber squatters.

I say we propose a “Domainer Bailout  Fund” to Congress, who is with me?

On a more serious note, while this post was intended for humor, It is imperative that we as domainers start finding and getting our own lobbyist in Washington. If no one is there for us when the laws are passed, more than likely, the laws will be against us.

  • Patrick McDermott says:

    Frankie,

    This is NOT a joke.

The Porn industry wants a BailOut too!

Because Adult Entertainment and porn DVD sales are down both Larry Flint(Hustler magazine) and Joe Francis (Girls Gone Wild) are lobbying Congress for a $5 Billion BailOut.

They claim the porn industry accounts for tens of thousands of jobs as their justification.

This was in yesterday’s New York Daily News.

  • Patrick,
I know about Mr Flint and the other guy. I saw the news too yesterday. I just did not want to give there cause any more publicity.

  • Scott says:

Not that I’m defending the pr0n bailout, but the pr0n industry is credited with thousands of jobs and strongly drives technology innovations. Past examples are streaming video and video compression.

There would be no YouTube without the pr0n industry.

  • I read in November that GoDaddy, eNom and Network Solutions asked Congress for bailout assistance.

Forgive Me Domainers For I Have Failed

This is definitely not the title I had envisioned nor the post that I had planned for this point in time but this is the post I have for you today. I am hoping that in sharing this openly that it might somehow inspire someone in the same condition and let them know that they are not alone. Failure on its own is not bad since what becomes of you after is more important than the failure itself.

This post is a story of my passion and drive for a particular domain and how I have struggled and failed repeatedly to bring it to its full potential. Where do I start, I will try a quick summary of events leading to my latest failure. I purchased Petmemorial(dot)com a couple of years ago in the secondary market. At the time of purchase, all I had was passion and love for animals. (more…)

Analyse this: Offer for uAnalyse.com?

Just thought you guys will get a kick out of this. It is possible a lot of you may have already received similar offers in the past but I have come to realize that no two domainers replies to offers quite the same way.  These days I have taken to ignoring obvious low ball offers from Sedo. A lot of people will frown at this practice and I am not advocating it to be the best method but I am thinking if you see a category killer domain with more than 10 past offers, it is unlikely, 500 bucks is the asking price.  When offers come to me directly via email, sometimes, I will wait till I get to my home office to reply to such offers after due research and other times, I will reply immediately from my Droid. Does your company support our troops?

1998 Texas Air Force Base

Today is veterans day (See me in my Air Force blues; circa 1998) . It is fashionable for a company to claim that they support our troops or that they support veterans but how many really do? Without knowing some companies actually do not support our troops and those who support there efforts overseas even when they could have. This issue has been on my chest now for about 4 years.

It all started when I served with the US Air force as a support contractor in the desert   about 4 years ago, this is a couple of years after my enlistment. When you wanted to shop online, it was then you discovered that very few companies will ship to military bases overseas even though it would have cost them the same thing as shipping to any stateside by Priority mail. US bases overseas use what is called APO or FPO zip codes. When I was there, I had to take my hats off for (more…)

Behold the interim look of PetMemorial(dot)com

Going from a free site to an adsense site may not be much of a challenge but going from a free/donations/ adsense site to a product based site is not so easy. As some of you know, my designers and programmers have been working on PetMemorial(dot)com for some time now. Design wise they are 90% done but when it comes to  functionality, we may still have some extensive tweaking to do. Well I took the time this weekend to give the site a face lift. We have often referred to the old site as the functional place holder of the real deal. I think I will call this one the interim place holder of the final site.

What you see now is nothing like what the actual site will look like. This is just me playing around but with a purpose. (more…)

Which Domain Name will you use?

I am in a kind of dilemma. I have three  likely domain names for a pet classifieds website. The problem is that I have to set up one of them as a pet classifieds site. Since I do not have the .com for the most likely term searched, which of the following domains will  you use if you were me  and why?

Please note that the industry leader on pet classifieds in google is currently a dot US!

So here are my options:

Candidate 1.) PetClassified (Dot) net

Candidate 2.) PetClassifeds (Dot) org

Candidate 3.) PetClassifiedAds (Dot) com

The most searched term is “Pet Classifieds”

I already have the best possible classifieds software installed at the back end of one of them since a year ago but never activated it.  I will switch if the vote is overwhelmingly against my original pick.

Thanks for your time and opinions.

How effective is this for domain marketing?

How far would you go to sell a domain? How far have you ever gone to sell one? How much would you spend to sell a domain? These are all the questions that came to mind as I opened my mail box yesterday and saw these two postcards amongst other mail from Google and Yahoo telling me to come and advertise with them. These two postcards were not from Yahoo or Google. As a matter of fact, I have never had any previous dealings with its sender/s to the best of my knowledge.

I will not string you along any longer, here are the pictures of the postcards. After you have gone through them, consider the fact that one of them has 28 cents postage on it. If the sender sent out 100,000 pieces of mail, that will bring the cost of this mailing to $28,000 USD. What if they just sent a misery 5,000 pieces? the cost will be $1400.

I am not knocking this mailing by any means. In-fact I give the people or person responsible an “A” for effort. I encourage anything that brings domaining to mainstream but my problem is that neither my wife nor any of my friends got this postcard. Just wondering if the domaining community was these peoples target, wouldn’t a simple ad on Domaining.com or DnForum  or even a featured listing on Sedo been cheaper? Please share your thoughts.

Hey there Frank, I read from your other post that you’ve been away so welcome back!

Yeah, this method of marketing domains has been discussed a few times recently by some of the bloggers in the domain community.
One such post that I remember was by Jason over at DNPimping.com

    http://www.dnpimping.com/domaining/domain-spotlight-tuesdays-featherpad-com/

I would go so far as to say that this person/these people target domainers and blof owners specifically.

Although the domain names themselves are not too bad, I don’t think it’s particularly creative and I think the asking prices are nonsensical. This is just my humble opinion however.

  • Thanks Jim,
I suspected it might have been covered while I was away. I however did cover it incase it was missed.

My View on ccTLD

Most of us have watched the video by the 3000 dollar a day domainer. One of the reasons I waited this long to post my views is because I really do not want to influence any one’s decision. However if you care to know what I personally think, then here it is.

Domains as an Alternative Asset Class

I think we in the domain industry need to stop pitching domains as a marketing medium and start pitching it as an alternative asset class – as online real estate. If you approach a business and tell them that “ the right name is to a business what the right building or location is to an offline entity”, then  it’s easier for people to see things as valuable…
The problem with marketing is that it has always been a bit nebulous. By that I mean until online marketing and advertising, one couldn’t show EXACTLY the relationship between dollar-for-dollar spending on marketing and how much profit or increased sales have come in. (more…)

A good name is better than great riches

The title of this post was lifted from Proverbs 22:1 NIV  “A good name is more desirable than great riches….” How true this is with our present economy. We are currently in a recession and every economist knows that to right this economy, the Government will try to infuse some funds into the system which will lead to a period of inflation. If everything goes well, they will be able to balance the economy with time otherwise your guess is as good as mine. (more…)

Why they named it Amazon.com

Long time everyone. Ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes and why a company may choose one name over another. Ever wondered why your supposedly one worder never seams to catch the attention of venture capitalist or startups?  Like I promised I have resolved to post only when inspired to do so.  As some of you know I went back to school.  Recently my Economics term paper revolved around picking one company that begins with the  initial of your last name and answering over 50 questions based on your company of choice’s   full *10-K report.  For me,  Amazon was the obvious choice due to the fact that I do most of my shopping online and Amazon tend to get the lion share of all that shopping. Secondly, It is a pretty young company so I hoped its 10-K report will be shorter and easier to read than say Apple. inc.

Well need less to say that this assignment made me know more about Amazon than I ever imagined and that brings me to the tit-bit I wish to share.   For some of us who have not been around log enough in domaining, it might be news to us that the original name of Amazon.com was; well not Amazon.com. According to  Wikipedia.org;

“Jeff Bezos founded Amazon.com, Inc. in 1994 and the site went online in 1995. The company was originally named Cadabra, Inc., but the name was changed when it was discovered that people sometimes heard the name as “Cadaver”. The name Amazon.com was chosen because the Amazon River is one of the largest rivers in the world, and so the name suggests large size, and also in part because it starts with “A” and therefore would show up near the beginning of alphabetical lists.”

Felt this was interesting enough to share.  I have always found naming facinating as it can sometimes make or break a company. I also enjoy it immensely when I am consulted towards the naming of a new company.   I am currently working with a friend in picking up a domain name for her online venture.

That’s it for today but before I go I will like to leave you with this little words of wisdom that I cannot take credit for “Love your wife, hug your kids always, use your good dishes, wear your good suit. Life is too short to be lived marginal!

Trademark Solution to UDRP Losses

Correct me if I am wrong. However this is a thought that has been bogging me for a while. I will keep it nice and short and hopefully you can fill in the details where I fall short. Who amongst you will buy a house for 100K and not have insurance on it. What if you own one thousand houses worth 100K each, would you still have insurance on every one of them? The reason I ask these questions is that it seams to me that if I have a domain worth 100k and above that could potentially be challenged by UDRP (Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy) trademark thieves, then I will probably invest  a couple of dollars to trademark it. Ironically I think it cost me less than 1k.  Seriously, it is not that hard. I own a trademark and I did it all by myself without the help of a single lawyer or anyone for that matter. I just hit its renewal mark a couple of months ago and with a few clicks and my credit card, it was done and I do not have to worry about it for the next ten years or so. The trademarked name is probably not worth anywhere near 100k but the idea behind it was valuable enough for me to want to protect it at the time. Wondering what my TM is, well it is, “Safari Rack” registered Mar 1. 2005 Reg. No. 2,929,776

Since this discuss is not on how to apply for a trademark, I will not go into that. I just thought I should bring up for discussion a line of thought that has had me worried each time I read about UDRP loses that in my own opinion could have been protected. Take for example the recent UDRP loss of Octopus.com. A simple trademark for Octopus.com would have prevented this. I am quite sure the United States Patent and Trademarks will not allow the term “Octopus” to be claimed exclusively but Octopus.com sure can if Amazon.com can be trademarked. The owner could have trademarked the domain for whatever it was she was doing with it on her site. I am just saying, the common consensus is that most people will fight harder not to loose 10k than they will fight to get 10K, so why is this so different when it comes to domaining? Why do we not put up much of a fight to protect that which is ours?

FYI here is a brief article on trademark cost and application from About.com (Not Affiliated). I am just making the link available here as a courtesy for those who want a brief overview of the process.
OK time to go back to my studies. Talk to everyone soon, I will try not to stay away for too long this time.

see… this is what we need in the domaining industry… people who make sense. just in the last week i applied for a trademark to protect my most valuable name. and you gave me a good idea. why don’t we get a couple of lawyers who have nothing better to do and sue every company for civil racketeering who tries to take a domain that is not a clear trademark violation. i mean by the octopus ruling then livingsocial.com could take social.com for $1500 instead of maybe paying five million for it. unfairness sucks.

  • Todaro,
“why don’t we get a couple of lawyers who have nothing better to do and sue every company for civil racketeering who tries to take a domain that is not a clear trademark violation.”
This is what a real domainning community will do. Unfortunately for now it is more like “everyman for himself” while greed, envy and insults are levied on the very few who have the ability to effect any form of change. I have been thinking of a post to that effect but have reneged so far because I do not have enough time to follow the comments I suspect may follow.
But if domainers spoke as one, if every domainer will chip in when there is an UNFAIR UDRP, (just the unfair ones) and defend the case, maybe this corporate domain thieves will not be so eager to steal domains. Just maybe.

Amazon.com, a website worth emulating

Good day people. It is probably months now since my last post. Initially it was due to school but recently it has also been due to a medical condition. I am alright . Approximately one month ago I had a hip resurfacing surgery. Over 4 years ago, I sustained what at the time seamed like a sprain while running at the beach. This later developed to pain so unbearable I had no other choices but to choose between a hip replacement surgery and a hip resurfacing surgery. At this very moment, I am somewhat off crutches and can move around almost freely. All that remains of my old pain is a six inch incision scar.

I have always been a prolific web shopper but when  you are home and cannot move much, Internet shopping takes a whole new meaning. There is one thing Amazon does that I still do not understand how they pull it off and still make a profit. For $79 a year you get to join the exclusive “Amazon prime” this means that whatever Amazon sells with the Prime symbol on it gets shipped to you for free with 2 day shipping and for an extra $3.99 you get it next day. Amazon has become my number one shopping site especially around birthdays and holidays. No matter how late I procrastinate, I can always surprise my nephews and nieces with presents that arrive just on time. Last fathers day, I ordered a wrist watch on Friday 7 PM EST and it was delivered on Saturday 11 AM  and I wore it to church on Sunday at 10.30 Am. How do they do they do it? I don’t know. Sure there is FedEx next day but how does a big company like Amazon manage to cut to the chase and package and ship products with such efficiency? I believe  this singular factor will help pioneer Amazon to a level its rivals will not dare dream of.

I have one or two websites that deal with consumers directly or that have in the past. I am always thinking, how and when do my sites get to the Amazon shipping status. First and foremost, I have tried to ensure that no product stays with me longer than it needs to once it is paid for. This is a start. If you are concerned about speed, note that FedEx ground will beat UPS ground in speed almost all the time and for about the same price.

Was this post really necessary? Well we are all domainers, some of us are webmasters, yet all of us should study and master the secret of the Amazon success because I believe it can be applied in almost any web business.

Where the smart money is

I am writing this post from my PDA so bare with me. I am going to be calling similar post in future “micro posts”
Most domainers will not want to believe this. I am a domainer so this is a painfull micro post to make. I believe that for this moment, the smart money is in stocks not domains. GE stocks closed yesterday with a stock costing less than a GE flourecent light bulb. GM stock now cost less than a gallon of gas!

  • Rab C says:

Stocks may look relatively cheap against previous highs but the risk of getting in now is that there is a real chance of contagion in the markets making the prices you see today almost worthless. People are looking for a bottom, but in reality we are far from the bottom. AIG just announced a record quarterly $60B loss. The real bottom might occur when the economy deteriorates to a screeching halt and a new economy emerges from the ashes of the old. Not trying to scaremonger but this is a real possibility, cash has to be king right now.

  • You are right about the significance of cash now but if you hold on to it too long withot a constructive use, it might end up buying much less whwn inflation hits. I believe some stocks are worth considering as it is never prudent to put all of your eggs in one basket

  • Tony says:

    Frankie,

I thought the same thing 3 months ago. 3 months from now, we will think this again as the prices drop even more.

If only we had a crystal ball! Or a time machine!

  • Rab C says:

To figure out the bottom, you have to figure out what might be the driving force to kick start a recovery. After every great depression there has been a boom. But this decline is different as it is hard to see where the recovery might come from.

Could it be realestate? Unlikely, 2.2 million homes lie empty.
Could it be the auto industry? Unlikely too, over capacity is killing the industry.
Technological advancements? Hardly. It could be argued that huge technological leaps made since the desktop went mainstream is a factor in causing the present decline. As a matter of fact further technological advancements is likely to see even more job losses in any recovery.
Could it be be the services industry?Nope, it for the most part has been a smoke screen, any recovery there will be limited to a heavily regulated market.

Maybe this time the recovery will entail recognizing that the previous decade was a period of peak production(over production) and that the present decline is a pull back to levels of required sustainability rather than excesses of the past. Maybe we are heading to where the economy should really be at. If thats the case we have to recognize that full employment is a thing of the past and that as a whole we need a better distribution of wealth for all and an incentivized system for people that work.

  • Tia Wood says:

Stocks may be cheaper now because of the economy but domain names are far less risk.

What is wrong with the rest of the world?

Have you ever wondered if  it is just you or the rest of the world does not get it? Have you ever told someone the url of a site. Let us use PetHall.com for example. Why will the person go home and type PetHall.com into Google? What is your browser for?

If you already know the place you are going to? Why do you need directions? This is like using GPS to go to your best buddies house. A route you are very familiar with.

Now 80 percent will type in the whole url in Google  as “PetHall.com” while some will just go and google “PetHall”.

Now it really sucks to be you if you are the owner of PetHall and when your name is googled, you are not #1

I have a .comsite  each time it is googled, Google  asks the googler if they mean thesite.org? this site is a .com!

It is amazing how little main street knows about simple browsing. Do you have similar experiences or stories?

  • I totally Agree with you – This is one of my PET HATES!

Why do people search a full adress that they already know!

    WHY,WHY, WHY!

Shows so many people still need to be educated on domains.

    Regards,

    Robbie

  • Scott says:

Most of the people I work with, who are in no way tech-ignorant, still insist on typing the url into the search engine and not the browser bar.

Also, small word of advice: I would scratch the center alignment :)

  • Patrick McDermott says:

“Why will the person go home and type PetHall.com into Google?”

    Frankie,

There are reasons why someone will go to a search engine to type in a URL.

I do it all the time for if the URL is new to me and I want to research the company.

By going to a SE instead of the address bar you can see what else is there regarding the particular company you’re interested in.

The very first time I got on the internet I went to an Internet Cafe to research a Business Opportunity.

If I went directly to the site all I would find is whatever the company wanted me to see.

Somehow I knew to go to Google and I typed in the company
    name.

To my surprise one of the first links that came up was a
CompanyNameSucks.com site and other complaint sites.

This led me to so many other sites that my eyes were wide opened to the incredible possibilities of the Internet.

I stayed online 12 hours that day.

I still often go to Google when I’m checking out a company.

Companies that I already know are either bookmarked
    or I will go direct.

Frankie, you are offering a service with DNOptimizers.com.

If I didn’t know your blog and was interested in your service you can bet I’d go to Google and type in DNOptimizers and see what comes up.

If there are complaints I’ll know to be wary.

If I find positive comments then I would feel comfortable
    using your service.

    Comprende???

  • @ Scott,
The centering was not intentional. Must have happened when I inserted the logo. I have fixed it now.

    @Patrick
Comprende, but this post was not directed to the category of people you just described. The people I am talking about just use Google like a browser not the way you just mentioned. Sometimes when I want to find out info about a site but usually after I have actualy gone to the site i Google it but I do not use Google as GPS.

The best Webmaster and Domain Forums in the World

Like I promised, for most of this week I will be posting what I believe as best in the world. Best in the world to me is usually based on research and documentation but mostly on personal experience. At the bottom of this post you will find a listing o f the top 20 webmaster forums in the world.

I have listed them here for statistical purpose but I am point out a few salient points that  I think the modern day domainer should be concerned about

For a newbie domainer, I am about to recommend a forum I do not even visit that often anymore but I believe it is a good place to start. It is more like kindergarten but the knowledge you will get here, however  rudimentary will help you throuugout  your domaining career. It is also worthy of mention that the people at this particular forum are much nicer and your idiosyncrasies will most likely be more tolerable here than the top domainer forums listed below.

The forum is DiscussNames.com managed by Afternic. Spend at least 3 weeks here, do not buy any domains until you have read most of the important post in that forum. Do a search on a fellow called “Danielr” and read as much of his posts as you can. This will prove to be invaluable information as you grow in your domaining career.

From DiscussNames.com I will recommend DNforum.com. A lot of players in this forum. It is very active. Less tolerant but by now  you should know your right from your left. I am a platinum member at DNforum. Don’t worry, the best time to upgrade is when they have a sale and hopefully it will align with when you have just made a sale so you don’t even feel the pinch. It is a once in a lifetime payment so it shouldn’t hurt much. Remember you do not have to pa y to be a member. A lot of big players frequent this forum and it is a rather very informative forum.

NamePros is like the name says is where most of the big player like to hang out. It has a rather vibrant market place.
Has a boutique feel about it, some say it is more classy. I think it is heavily moderated. If statistics alone are used as a measure, NamePro  is the top domain forum in the world edging out DNforum in Alexa  and compete ranking

Overall as a webmaster, digital point is the best, it offers everything and an unbelievable knowledge base for all,

So her it is the final verdict

Digital point (Best webmaster forum in the world)
NamePros (Best Domainer forum in the world)
DNForum (My personal best Domainer forum)

Domains as an Alternative Asset Class

I think we in the domain industry need to stop pitching domains as a marketing medium and start pitching it as an alternative asset class – as online real estate. If you approach a business and tell them that “ the right name is to a business what the right building or location is to an offline entity”, then  it’s easier for people to see things as valuable…
The problem with marketing is that it has always been a bit nebulous. By that I mean until online marketing and advertising, one couldn’t show EXACTLY the relationship between dollar-for-dollar spending on marketing and how much profit or increased sales have come in.

People need to know when you buy the right domain you are buying TRAFFIC. Yes the branding effect of a good domain is nice but the smart companies realize the right domain is buying you targeted traffic.

Here is an example. You can advertise on TV and spend $5,000 and get a 1% conversion rate. You can spend that same $5,000 and get a keyword rich domain name or a domain with type traffic that will:
a) land you on the 1st page of google; 54% of the traffic goes to the person in position 1 (according to AOL statistics) so the right domain can very likely and materially mean the difference between no.1 and no2 for the right set of keywords

b) get targeted type in traffic. The right domain lowers your online advertising costs significantly. Let’s say you get a domain with 10 type in visitors per day. That’s 300 visitors per month. If the PPC cost per one click is high – let’s say $1/click. You are spending $300/month for 300 visitors. If you divide 5000/30 what do you get?

That’s approximately 17. In other words in 17 months (less than 2 years), you’ve paid off your investment. But here’s the kicker, it’s like renting vs. buying. Not only do you get to live in a place while you are buying it, you are also getting EQUITY. Unlike PPC traffic, once you purchase the asset out right, it’s yours FOREVER. So not only do you get that same 300 visitors per month, in less than 2 years, you’ve bought yourself 300 visitors per month for life!

There are other benefits as well. The smart companies know that type in traffic converts at almost twice the rate or regular traffic. If someone type in buycarnewyork.com they are not looking for free mp3’s. Ever heard the expression “first impressions count”? If someone finds what they want at your site, people are lazy. They will buy from you and they will keep coming back to you….

There’s also the fact that a relevant domain lowers one PPC costs.  So in sum, the right domain isn’t just about “sounding good to your customers”. It’s about location, location, location.

In reality a name is nothing more than an online address, precisely. The domain [domain].com is really the verbal equivalent of the Internet address 123.456.456 (etc).

When you put things in a perspective that a business can understand – showing the comparables between domains as an asset and their alternatives (buying traffic, SEO, etc). People can get their head around it.

I personally view domains as an alternative asset class and I feel if we all can better educate the public, the better off we’ll be. By the way, I saw an interesting article about the guy who owns NewYork.com that you might find interesting – http://www.dnjournal.com/cover/2007/november.htm

One of the main purpose of this interim look is to gradually introduce some of our product line to our audience and graduallygauge peoples enthusiasm to different types of  colors, products, and product lines.

One other advantage of the interim site is that it gives me the opportunity to gradually begin to build my product descriptions and gradually get them into the search engine while I wait for the final site. Also because I have something really functional now, I am at liberty to allow some lax time for my coders and designers in hope that this will in turn mean a better site in the end.

My wife thinks the interim site is very catchy but we both agree that the final look which we have both seen a draft of is more professional. For starters most designers agree that text on colored background is not really the best you can come up with for a site. However right now, we are simply trying to juice things up a little. Who knows people might even prefer the dark look.

If you are currently working on a site, how can I help you speed things up?  need advice or something? What do you think about the interim look? If you are a pet lover, what would you like to see implemented in the new site? if you have ever lost a pet, would you consider dropping a few lines in PetMemorial(dot)com, you never know who your simple words might help out of an emotional jam.

The 1st thing I would do is get rid of the dark background and white lettering on black…get everything lighter.

I had to leave the one page after 5 seconds because it hurt my eyes.

If you are using a css system, should be easy changing colors.

Now, once lighter design…now you can concentrate on the design…which is very nice overall.

Lighten everything up, then revisit for comments.

I understand you may want “dark” for funeral/memorial needs or wants…but…..after a while, I want my pet to find the light!

    Best of luck,
    Paul

  • curvee says:

Your website put me off, the design is woeful , sorry to use that language but if you want to use the website for business, I must suggest that the website should be neat and cool to the eyes instead of muddle everything up.

You really need a good revamp of the site. Best of luck

  • Alan Dodd says:

The site looks nice to me – but I am not an expert.

The issue seems to me – which of these wordpress themes convert? Which have a proven track record, rather than being a guess.

The other day I heard WordPress “does not convert”. True? False? Where is the objective, hard, cold, evidence!

The Best Website Hosts in The World!

This is a very bold title I must admit but by the time you are done reading this post, you will see why I beleive so and chances are that you will share my believe too. When I started my first Website,
PetHall.com, that was around the  year 2000. There were not many developed websites then. I arrogantly felt that only pets.com was my competitor or inspiration. I poured my all into PetHall.

At its peak, PetHall had free email for subscribers, that is somebody@pethall.com( Yes this was big back then) We had free greeting cards, horoscopes, you name it. PetHall was built to be a portal for pet lovers and they embraced it as such. PetHall also had one very important component, it had a fledging pet classifieds section. I had e-Classifieds Enterprise edition installed (e-Classifieds was the thing then) We were doing so good at the classifieds section that we had a couple of shelters listing stuff there: of course everything was free. I had no clue on how to monetize it then but that is not the reason for this post.

Here is the dilemma, back then I had to hire freelancers every time I wanted to do anything to my site. I did not know how to FTP or do anything then. This would not have been much of a problem if not that every time my host went down, I had to repair or reinstall my classifieds. After moving from host to host trying to find a stable host, I gradually lost all my customers.

This was when I decided that enough was enough. After days o f extensive research, I learnt of this host Called ICDSoft They had a very bold statement about their up-time and reliability but what caught my attention was that they claimed to respond to all Support request within (if I remember correctly) 15 minutes.
You guessed right, instead of signing up I gave them a try. I wrote, ” My name is Frankie I am thinking of signing up but  I am also wondering how long it will take  you guys to get back to me” I hadn’t even left there site yet when my hotmail messenger service (I used hotmail then) popped up and this is what they wrote ” So Frankie how did we do? Let us know if we can be of any service to you” I  wrote back “impressed” I signed up and PetHall has never had a problem since then. Now this is why I signed up with ICDSoft but the reason I have stayed with them and hosted virtually all my sites there until recently is this. When you are new to domaining or not that tech savvy, this peoples support is unprecedented. They have helped me install scripts that they should not even bother with. They have helped me with all sorts of technical issues that they have nothing to do with just because I host with them. As of this writing, the following sites are still hosted with them PetHall.com, SkyDomains.com (yes this blog ) FleaMarketFinds.com, HearingDogs.com and PetMessageBoard.com.

While the links above and below are affiliate links, I put my websites where my mouth or shall I say my keystrokes are. ICDSoft is second to non when it comes to service and if you are a newbie and not too tech savvy, ICDSoft is  your best launching pad.

Web Hosting By ICDSoft.com

The Second is like it. HostGator is the choice of most experienced domainers. They have a very attractive price package. You get to host multiple domains on one account. A little tech know how is required. Overall service is pretty good. DNoptimizers.com is hosted by HostGator

Tech support is pretty good at HostGator though they will not bend over backwards for you. For most people the tech support is great but I have been spoilt already by ICDSoft

Now  you know where I host my sites. Like I already stated, all t he links and banners in this post are affiliate links. I however pledge my believe in this post. I have not been influenced by the affiliate payouts as you can use domain tools to see that PetHall.com has been hosted with ICDSoft for a while now. Like I said, I put my domains where my keystrokes are. After you have checked this sites out, please do not forget that I do not get credit if you do not use the links or banners I have provided in this post.

If this review has been helpful to you please let me know. I plan to do a series of what I call the best in the world which is basically a review of services I use or have used.

The Article Domainers Wish Every Business Framed

Happy new year everyone.  I will continue my policy of blogging only when I absolutely have something to say and this is one of those times. I saw this article in Yahoo and I wish more people especially people in business read this article or at least the part of it that I am going to devote this short post to. Believe me this is worth every second of the 3 minutes of your life you are about to share with me.

The article is on Six companies companies that did not survive 2010 and one of the companies there really caught my attention as a domainer. Since I am a domainer and do not want to be accused of embelishing the article, I am going to do a long quote instead of putting this juicy story in my own words.

Eliene Zimmerman of The New York Time writes about Wesabe a personal finance Web site based in San Fransicico;

Wesabe opened in 2006 and closed in July.

AT ITS PEAK Wesabe was one of the first movers in the Web 2.0 financial space. Its founders, Mr. Hedlund and Jason Knight, envisioned a site that would help consumers budget their money and make better spending decisions. The company received two rounds of venture capital financing totaling $4.7 million and signed up 150,000 members in its first year.

WHAT WENT WRONG Ten months after Wesabe’s introduction, a competitor, Mint.com, appeared. As Mr. Hedlund acknowledges, Mint had a better name and better design and was easier to use. Within nine months, Mint had 300,000 users and $17 million in venture financing. In 2009, Mint was sold to Intuit for $170 million.”

All I can say is what a terrible name Wesabe is. This guy did not have to own Mint.com when he started but he could have at least opted for a better name than Wesabe.

All I can say it ” amen “. It’s about time somebody else gets it. Thanks for posting this.

  • Shane says:

I have to disagree. I don’t think the name helped but it simply came down to a competitor that was better. It could have been called Save.com and it would have failed. I have never seen one case in history that a bad domain killed a company. It certainly can hurt and make it difficult for the consumer to find, but a great site, concept and business plan will always trump a bad domain.

  • While a domain name can help in branding, search ranking and in the case of a .COM in type-in traffic, the domain name alone cannot guarantee a business’ success. Businesses in prime locations can suffer from the cost of being in those locations (i.e. restaurants on Fort Lauderdale Beach which have closed). Sometimes a location close to the ideal spot is best because the rent savings can be significant. But of course location can still make a huge difference in a business’ success.

  • A domain name alone can’t guarantee success, but in this case the company could have used a fraction of their $4.7 M financing to buy a killer domain with some traffic that would have greatly helped. Wesabe is a poor name, and doesn’t pass the radio or word of mouth test.

  • Hello Frankie,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Although some may say that a domain address cannot guarantee success, What is the odds on truth of a domain names importance?

All words lay down an emotional foundation in our minds.Words emit emotional energy that is picked up and either attracts attention or drives it away. So I ask you how important are words?

    Gratefully, Jeff Schneider (Contact Group)

  • tricolorro says:

“All I can say is what a terrible name Wesabe is.”

I remember thinking when Wesabe first came out and was getting coverage that it was a big mistake to pick a name that sounds so much like Wasabi.

Possibility for confusion was too great.

  • Yea Wesabe is a “bad” name if you look compared to mint BUT it is brandable so even though Mint is very much generic, there marketing still can be to blame as well.

  • Shane, I do not know how or why your comment ended in the spam folder. I had to dig it out personally.

  • GBleezy says:

Damn, that makes sense about the easier, cleaner mint.com name…but really, how much of it was mint.com had better c0d3rs@work and a better site. They probably could have traded names and still lost…and i’m looking around the screen as I type this and it actually felt like I was flying for a second lol!! Or at least up in the air typing this…that’s funny.

  • It is appropriate time to make some plans for the future and it is time to be happy.
I have read this post and if I could I want to suggest you
few interesting things or advice. Perhaps you can write next articles referring to this article.
I desire to read even more things about it!

How I Quit My Job in 61 Days

Have you ever wondered how people make the leap from 9 to 5 working  for someone to 24/7 domaining? Have you ever wondered what goes on in there mind before the decision to quit there job and right after they actually quit? Have you ever wondered what it takes to quit your regular job? Well I met CleverlySlick about 2 months ago in the forum when he declared to the whole world that he was thinking of quiting his job. I kept tap on him and when he finally did I cornered him for a guest post. This is the story of a man who thinks he has had enough and have decided to take the bull by the horns like a valiant matador, defying all odds. This is the story CleverlySlick in his own words.

Thanks for your interest in my story. I will explain how I made this leap from 9-5 worker to 9-9 domainer. That’s right. I put 12 hours (sometimes more) a day as a full time domainer.
I have to. I quit a job that was sure to bring in a check every week to speculate (or should I say gamble) on domains so I have to put extra effort to make sure my son has the food and clothing he needs ALL THE TIME. So why did I do it? I had to because I was just seeing no future where I was working at. I was a Rail Car Technician for 5 years of my life, and for 5 years turning bolts and nuts I felt empty. Everyday it was the same repetitive things and really the only people making the monies was the company. This company makes an estimate of about 5-6 million a day selling trains.

I was only making $17.50 an hour. I would get paid on Fridays and by Friday evening after stretching the money to pay bills and buy food for the week I only had enough money to buy me a $12 bottle of rum and transportation money to go to work and come home. In 5 years of dedicating myself to that company physically and mentally, made a total of $1.78 in raises.

When I discovered domaining I thought to myself “the world is shifting toward the Internet so this has to be where the money is”. So I started studying, reading, learning and talking about domaining everyday. From 2005 until 2008 I was just studying and reading what people had to say in forums without saying a word to anybody. I had absolutely no money to invest in premiums so I started registering domains that I thought would be valuable in the future either for myself or for others. This happened late 2007. Every Friday I got paid I would set aside $20 to register domains (and of course my $12 bottle of rum) this went on for about a year.

In October of 2008 I decided to grow some hair on my chest and start trying to sell domains. ALL of my domains are hand reg’d ( registered) so according to the domainers in the forum, I can’t get much for them. I started calling businesses and getting rejected (sometimes even cursed at) and emailing and getting rejected. By late October I got 2 inquiries about these particular domains that I reg’d. Both of my domains fetched me figures in the low to mid $x,xxx. All this did was swell up my head even more and that’s when I started to give this domaining hustle a serious thought. On November I received another email for a domain that I hand reg’d and they offered me $xxx for that domain.it was an adult related domain.  That’s when I decided I’m going to quit my job and domain full time because this has a lot of potential if I dedicate myself more to it. So by January 9, 2009 I quit my job and now domaining full time. Since I quit my 9-5  job, I’ve had four successful sales for nice profits.

A lot of people have told me I’m nuts for quitting my job in such troubled times and sometimes I catch myself questioning the same thing. But if I don’t do this for myself I will never know for sure if it would’ve worked. Besides I go with my gut instinct and only trust my own judgments. I know I will not fail at this because persistence is key to perseverance and I believe that’s what a lot of us Americans have lost, is the knack to be persistent and go out there and make those sales and get the job done no matter what.

It doesn’t matter if your selling domains or lemonade, be persistent and don’t give up and you’ll eventually close a deal. Don’t let other tell you how worthless your domain is. Decide that for yourself through trials and tribulations. I’m still learning about choosing the right names to sell to businesses and end users and resellers. This industry is similar to the stock market where you have to constantly stay on top of trends. And when you want to make a sale, do it with confidence, persistence and I promise you will persevere. I haven’t made it a goal to become a millionaire from domaining. If it happens it happens. But I will be successful according to my means of success.

Here is the advice I gave cleverlyclick about two months ago on DNforum where I post as “idealer”

Before you leap.
It is always a good idea to get your side job which in this case is domaining take care of your smallest bill first, then your smallest bill and the next bill, by the time you make enough to pay all your bills and then some, that is when you can actually rationally begin to think of quiting your day job. I also have a new daughter and I appluad your confidence.
No matter how bad the economy is, I take solace in the fact that over 90% of the employable are still employed so that is not so bad.
Seek God first before you make a decision with your life

Have a great  Superbowl weekend. It is not a sin to drink but God does hate drunkenness. If you must drink, drink moderately.

Hanna-Pic

Hanna

My decision to buy the domain name then was as a result of some live events and a special dog called Hanna. Prior to purchasing the domain, I owned PetHall and it used to be a portal for pet lovers. In its prime PetHall offered free email, greeting cards and a lot of things which by today’s standards is not a big deal but was a big deal sometime around  2000 and 2003. When Hanna a German Shepard mix which belonged to my then girlfriends mother passed away, she was so devastated and frankly it could be said that words can not clearly describe how my girlfriends mother felt. However I did notice the soothing feeling Hanna’s memorial in PetHall gave her. At that very moment my ambition to provide a place where grieving pet owners can feel better and mingle with  other pet lovers who may be able to provide comfort was born. I purchased pet memorial a couple of months later and almost starved doing it. I was a lowly Airman with the US Air Force at the time.

From day one, I have never lacked ambition or ideas for pet memorial (PM) but I have never been able to bring my ideas for this wonderful domain to fruition. In the early days, it forwarded to pethall/petmemorial and then as my interest in pethall wained, my interest in PM grew.
I moved it to its own hosting and that was when the journey began. PM has been a Frontpage site, a Subdreamer site, it has been vbadvanced/vbulletin adapted site, It has been a Geek Articles and Review adapted site and even a WordPress site  and while it went through all these changes, my vision for the site remained strong, despite the fact that I was not getting it to be all it could be.

In 2006 when I was in the desert supporting the armed forces, I had 10 hours of spare time and a slow but available computer. I quickly set out for a coder and hired the best one I could find at vWorker then known as Rent-a-Coder. When this guy was done, What I got was a skeleton of what I had envisioned. I learned a hard lesson then which is to make sure everything in future is spelled out in writing. Do not assume anything when contracting a job. Some of these coders can be funny in there ways.  Needless to say, that development went no where, my money was gone and I still could not use the site he built. I however salvaged two functionality from his work which we call post-a-paw and light-a-candle. I patched these two functionality to the site as I went back to using and adapted vbulletin engine.

This year I wanted to make sure I focused on one domain or site.
From the middle of this year, I had one goal. It was simple. To finally bring PM to its full glory. I got two sample sites to explain the workings of a memorial site, I then proceeded to pen down every detail of how my PM would work. I posted the job again at a freelance site. I had over 30 bids. I then proceeded to ask each one of them questions to see if they even understood what they claim they can do. Most never replied satisfactorily. There was however one  particular coder/company who was rated #22 out of over 300,000 of his peers who impressed me.  He wrote flawless English, and when I fired him with a 10 point questionnaire, he proceeded to answer each and everyone of my questions. He was by far NOT the cheapest, he was not exactly the most expensive but he was up there; top 5 in pricing. He was however the most highly rated in expertise amongst those that bid on the job.

I am going to cut a long story short here. My coder was never able to complete the job despite 3 extensions. What bothered me the most was that the main functionality that mattered to me was never really done even though he had completed 70 percent of the site. Another issue was the fact that his so called completed work was littered with avoidable errors and bugs. I got tied of spending almost 5 hours daily combing through his work to point out errors and omissions. When I finally pulled the plug on the project, it was not as much the fact that he never finished the job but more along the lines that I did not think he could ever finish the job. He had hit his limit. He is a great coder but with very little imagination. The back-end of his work was an apology to say the least. Luckily for me this time, I had a very descriptive contract  with clear spelled out expectations so I was able to work out with my funds.

I am gradually bringing back PM to a  WordPress site as of the time of this writing. In domaining as in live, you will hit many roadblocks but somehow the difference between winners and losers is often determined by whether you get up and keep fighting or you trow in the towel. I have decided I will fight to the end even though at times like this it becomes difficult to keep a positive attitude yet it is at times like this that one needs a positive attitude the most.

Forgive me domainers for this  should have been a grand tale of the successful launch of the best pet memorial site the world have ever seen, a place where grieving pet owners can find some comfort and solace. Yes I have failed yet again but by Gods grace, I will succeed some day. If this becomes my last post before Christmas; Merry Christmas everyone and may the New Year bring forth great insights and blessings from the most high.

Vowels.me now DNoptimizers.com

Yes we heard you loud and clear. We have decided to change the name of our bid for contract website from Vowels.me which got little love to DNoptimizers.com which shows a lot of potential.
From day one, almost every domainer complained about the name Vowels.me, for non domainers, I always had to explain the story behind  Vowels.me which I thought was a pretty cool story.
In the end this Vowels.me will go into history as one of my worst branding efforts yet.
The fact is after all the complaints and suggestions from well meaning friends and readers of my blog, I had to sit down and do a little thinking. The only site I ever paid adwords for is a non dotcom. I really  do not want to go that route again. Do not get me wrong, I will advertise but this time for a different reason.

Aside from the fact that the name itself even for a dotcom was just not good enough, I still say where is the love? where were all the dotMe people when I needed them. I had thought wrong that being one of the few dotMe sites out there, it will be notoriously popular. Anyway that is history now.

Behold the new DNoptimizers.com

The Mariam Websters Dictionary defines Optimizer as  “to make as perfect, effective, or functional as possible

So if you want to make your domain work for you, We have the contractors and freelancers to do it there

If you want to write a new code for a program
If you want to redesign your site
If you want a new site built from scratch
If you want a new minisite, built and optimized
If you want a new logo, If you want a better logo
If you want Content writers
If you want Tech Writers

What ever demands  issues life  brings your way on  your quest for perfection online, DNoptimizers.com is there for you. DNoptimizers specializes on content , minisites, web development  and the general everyday challenges of a domainer.

The way it works is simple.

Lets say you have a project you want done. You want the best job and yet you want the best deal. You go to DNoptimizers.com and you  register, post your bid, and sit back as multiple professionals in that field bid for your contract. You get to choose who you want for the job. You do not always have to choose the lowest bidder, but you get to choose who is best for your particular project.
Even well established webdevelopment companies can bid for a project if the project is large enough for them. DNoptimizers.com is the market place for everyone. No one is excluded. Register now and try it out.
It is an exciting way of getting things done.

  • Troy says:

Cool logo, where did you get it done?

  • Thanks Troy,
The logo was done in house.
If you want something done just hit up DNoptimizers I am sure you will be impressed.

  • Jamie says:

I’m glad you made the change Frankie. I didn’t understand the Vowels.me domain choice either for what the site offered.

Do I like the second choice coming from a domainer…? Not so much either. (Just being real)

As domainers know, DN is for Domain Name, besides that group and it’s not that big, not many know what it is. Optimizers is not the easiest to spell, Optamisers, Optimisers etc.

So choosing the second name (an abbreviation with a hard word to spell)should of been thought more about also.

Domainer to Domainer, just trying to help.

    Jamie

  • Jamie,
You are right, only domainers know what DN means. Well this service is for domainers. But should a non domainer want to go to DomainNameOptimizers.com, they are welcome to. We will meet them at the site.
The same goes for DNoptimiZers, DNoptimiSers.com DNoptimized.com or even DNoptimised.com they will all fwd you to DNoptimizers.com
I am one of the biggest bad spellers around so spellability was taken into consideration. No matter the name you choose, some people will still fall into an invicible crack. We are hoping that will be a minor percentage.

I had a panel vet this name. 3 Domainers who where labelled as experts and 6 other everyday people.
By a point system. We picked DNoptimizers.com
It is no longer easy to get a domain name so if spellability is the only problem this name has then I think we have a clear winner here.
Thanks for your opinnion though, It is greatly appreciated.

  • Jamie says:

Good deal Frankie. I’m glad you covered all bases with the domain! Now my only question is why the Pure focus on only Domainers… lol

  • Domaining is the future and domainers hold the key. As domaining becomes main street, what we consider as being peculiar to domainers alone will actually become mainstreet. By the time things like DN will matter, main street will already know what it means.
Now to really answer your question, I really want a place where domainers and there interests are catered for. Domaining is an industry in its infant stage. All you have to do is imagine the future.
Now if you want something done, you will be dealing with people who understand the demands of this industry. You dont have to worry about your project being buried in a mountain of other projects.
It gets the attention it deserves. For the Developers out there, DNoptimizers gives them the opportunity to profile their skills and talents and to harness and fine tune those talents to perfection.

  • One more thing Jamie
If you type dnoptimisers into Google this very moment

Google will ask you if you mean DN Optimizers
    and if you click yes,
    Guess who is #1
    Thats right
    DNoptimizers.com !

  • Nice change. The good thing about having the ‘DN’ in the name, is that is brands that niche. Anyone can go to eLance and post projects for anything and everything, but it’s nice you’ll be focusing on projects specifically for the domain space. Best of luck!

My Two Hand Regs from the Superbowl

This is by no means an analogy of the Superbowl. I believe most of the bloggers have already done a superb job and blogs like DotWeekly has already gone in depth into the area I am usually  most interested in which is the ads.

This is just  to tell you about a little domain I purchased yesterday morning.  Call it predictive domaining, call it anything. Hopefully I made the right choice.  They are

100Ktalents (dot)com

 100Ktalent(dot)com

Yesterday morning I wrote the domain name on a piece of paper and showed it to a  couple of non domainer buddies.  I asked them if they will remember the name tomorrow. One of then said something remarkable “yes but only because  have seen the ad  more than  10 times already” I was like ‘Dude” this was not the name  you saw, this name was just registered a couple of  hours ago. You heard it referenced in ads but this was what stuck in your head.

Oh I said I was not going to talk about the Superbowl but I could not resist. How effective are the GoDaddy ads really? I wonder because I still have people who watched the Superbowl still asking me where to register a domain name. hmmm!!!!
I told one “Name.com” and he was looking for a sheet of paper to jot it down– really I am not making this up.

You will be amazed how uneducated the outside world is about domain names.
